Dennis Cirkin has told The Sunderland Echo that he has not “heard” about the rumours linking the Sunderland star with a return to Tottenham Hotspur, or a move to Brentford. Cirkin is impressing at Sunderland, since joining in 2021.
Cirkin, 20, scored his first goal for Sunderland on Saturday in a 2-1 win over Wigan. It was the left-back’s first-ever professional goal at senior level, having failed to play for Tottenham’s first team. It was his 50th Sunderland outing.
Not only did Cirkin score, but he also laid on an assist for Sunderland. That is, despite playing on the left of Tony Mowbray’s back three – away from his natural position of being a left-back. He is showing impressive versatility.
The Sun claimed earlier this month that Tottenham are keen on re-signing him. The Echo have previously said that Spurs have a £6million buyback clause in his contract. Meanwhile, The Sun also say London rivals Brentford are keen.
Asked about the rumours, he says: “I haven’t heard about any of these rumours, I’ve tried to stay away from it. I just try and play for Sunderland and I’m just trying to get back in the team here and that’s my main goal.”

Cirkin has not heard about rumours of a Tottenham return
While Cirkin is impressing, do Tottenham really need him? Ivan Perisic has come in and looks set to remain until at least the summer of 2024. Ben Davies remains a consistent part of the side. Ryan Sessegnon has been in superb form.
Destiny Udogie has also come in, but is on loan to Udinese and is shining. Sergio Reguilon is also out on loan, but his future at Tottenham looks as good as over. But there might be one crucial reason why Spurs want Cirkin back.
In the summer, they were dangerously close from having to leave players out due to a lack of homegrown talent in their Champions League squad. So, bringing Cirkin back would give them a homegrown, training at the club player.
