Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to react after Ouest France revealed that Rennes are in talks over a loan deal for William Saliba.
The report states that Mikel Arteta is open to loaning the Frenchman out, given his vast amount of options in the centre of defence.
It also says that Rennes were focused on landing Juventus’ Daniele Rugani, but the Arsenal man’s potential availability is an unexpected opportunity.
The Gunners currently have Rob Holding, Gabriel Magalhães, David Luiz, Shkodran Mustafi, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Calum Chambers and Pablo Mari available at centre-back, providing Saliba with serious competition.
Interestingly, the 19-year-old recently returned from his season-long loan spell at St Etienne to be handed the No.4 shirt at the Emirates.
In that respect, coupled with the £27 million spent on his services, it does seem strange that he could be shipped off once again.
However, Saliba is still a teenager, and it is crucial that he continues his development.
With so many senior centre-backs to compete with, Arteta may feel he isn’t able to provide the youngster with sufficient game-time.
Despite that very valid point, a number of Arsenal fans on Twitter seriously aren’t happy with this news.
