Bruno Fernandes has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur wanted to sign him last summer.

The former Sporting Lisbon midfielder joined Manchester United in a £67 million deal in January.

But Tottenham were long rumoured to be interested in the Portugal international, who has confirmed that Spurs were keen 12 months ago.

But the 25-year-old has suggested that the North Londoners baulked at Sporting’s valuation of him back then.

He said during an Instagram Live chat: “The first club that was close to signing me was Tottenham.

“With Pochettino…But I don’t know maybe they thought the amount Sporting wanted was too much so in that moment Sporting decide they don’t want to sell.

“Tottenham came in the summer but Manchester [United] was in January. Maybe Tottenham came again in January but when I knew Manchester was interested I just wanted to talk to Manchester.”

Fernandes has been a hit at Old Trafford so far and the same probably would’ve been true at Tottenham.

But he could be forgiven for not regreting that a move never happened, because Mauricio Pochettino, who seemingly wanted him, was sacked three months into the season following a very poor run of results.

He shares a nationality with Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho but would they have worked well together? We’ll probably never know.
