If rumours are believed, Tottenham Hotspur will listen to offers for Paulo Gazzaniga this summer.
Spurs signed Joe Hart on a free transfer in a move which could push Gazzaniga further down the pecking order, with both goalkeepers behind Hugo Lloris.
According to The Standard, Tottenham are open to letting the Argentine leave, but chairman Daniel Levy has just received a big, albeit accidental warning, on that front.
That’s because Hart dropped a clanger in the Lilywhites’ pre-season friendly against Watford this afternoon.
Yes, it’s only a friendly, but Hart’s confidence will undoubtedly be knocked by the gaffe – which led to a goal – nevertheless and Levy should think long and hard about letting Gazzaniga leave.
The former Southampton stopper – who cost £2 million in 2017 [The Sun] – is no stranger to goalkeeping errors himself, and nor is Lloris for that matter, but you could argue that Gazzaniga is a better player than the ex-England star in the first place.
The 28-year-old posted a man-of-the-match performance in a defeat by Liverpool last season, while the French keeper was injured, and on his day he really is quite a handy option between the sticks.
Even before Hart’s mistake, there was doubt as to whether he should be Jose Mourinho’s number two -and now there definitely is.
Typically, Levy is a cool, calculated and meticulous figure, but letting Gazzaniga leave after Hart’s error today would be considered a big gamble and one that the North Londoners don’t necessarily have to take.
