Liverpool recorded a third Premier League win in a row on Wednesday on an evening where Trent Alexander-Arnold was, once again, hugely influential.
The England international has looked a player reborn in a new role given to him by Jürgen Klopp.
Alexander-Arnold has been deployed in an inverted full-back role, something we have seen Mikel Arteta do with Oleksandr Zinchenko this season.
Now, the Liverpool No.66 has broken a record in his new position.
What’s the story?
Well, the £62m man has registered five assists so far throughout April.
Alexander-Arnold assisted Roberto Firmino in the 2-2 draw against Arsenal, before grabbing two assists in the 6-1 win over Leeds, one in the 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest and another in the 2-1 win against West Ham.
In doing so, the 24-year-old has now become the first Liverpool player in Premier League history to record five assists in a single month of the competition, as detailed by Opta.
Alexander-Arnold still has one game left in April to better his record as Liverpool welcome Tottenham to Anfield on Sunday 30th April.
It is hard to believe Opta’s claim, as it feels like Alexander-Arnold has enjoyed far more productive months for Liverpool in recent years when the Reds have been at full throttle under Klopp.
Nevertheless, it just goes to show that the Liverpool No.66 is settling into his new role fantastically well, and his effectiveness in that area gives Klopp’s side a whole new dimension.
Alexander-Arnold position makes Liverpool’s summer window very interesting
Before Klopp moved Alexander-Arnold into more of a central role, much of the discussion regarding Liverpool was their need for a new midfielder.
The Reds still need reinforcements in that department, although their academy graduate’s efforts in the inverted role open up a debate as to whether Klopp should sign another right-back now as well.
Having said that, it remains to be seen if the German will keep Alexander-Arnold in the inverted role should he manage to sign some new midfielders this summer.
Whatever happens, it is hugely encouraging for Liverpool to now have a fresh way to use one of their most talented players.
