Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are reportedly about to suffer a blow in their quest to sign Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips, who is expected to join Manchester City in the summer transfer window.

According to the Sunday Mirror (5/6; page 73), Liverpool will try to sign Phillips from Leeds after missing out on Aurelien Tchouameni to Real Madrid.

Leeds reportedly value the England international midfielder at £60 million.

Sport subsequently reported that Liverpool have given up signing Barcelona midfielder Gavi and are ‘now negotiating for’ Phillips.

However, according to journalist Miguel Delaney’s Reading the Game newsletter in The Independent this afternoon (12:36pm), the 26-year-old is expected to move to City.

Delaney wrote: “City have again made a number of recent league winners available for transfer, just as they did last summer.

“They include Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva, the Portuguese now the subject of interest from Barcelona. Kalvin Phillips is now widely expected to join Pep Guardiola’s side.”

Manchester City signing Kalvin Phillips a blow for Liverpool

In our view, Manchester City signing Kalvin Phillips would be a blow for Liverpool.

Yes, Liverpool have three brilliant midfielders in Fabinho, Thiago and Jordan Henderson, but Phillips is one of the best combative midfielders who would be able to make an immediate impact at Anfield.

Moreover, City signing Phillips means that they will get stronger, and we know that they beat Liverpool to the Premier League title this past season.
