Newcastle target James Maddison has been speaking about the Magpies in England‘s World Cup camp as Eddie Howe attempts to sign him.
The England international – who Leicester want £60m for – is said to be Newcastle’s top transfer target, according to the Northern Echo.
Now, Maddison has discussed rumours of a move to St James’ Park, while also opening up on his relationship with Kieran Trippier, Nick Pope and Callum Wilson.
What’s the story?
Well, the 26-year-old is clearly aware of interest from Newcastle.
Speaking to Josh Denzel from the Lions’ Den on England’s YouTube channel, Maddison said: “To be fair, me, Cal, Tripps, and Popey have been having a bit of banter. It’s three on one with the Newcastle boys.
“We’ve been having a bit of banter about the Boxing Day game coming up, and obviously there’s a bit of speculation (about a transfer).”
You can understand why Howe is so keen to sign the Leicester No.10 in 2023.
Maddison was arguably the best attacking midfielder in England during the first half of the campaign, scoring seven goals while also providing four assists in just 13 appearances for the struggling Foxes.
Unfortunately, he is yet to feature under Gareth Southgate at the World Cup due to a knee injury, although there is no denying that he is one of the most talented footballers the nation has to offer.
James Maddison would take Newcastle up a gear
Things are already going pretty well on Tyneside right now as Newcastle sit third in the Premier League.
However, the Magpies would surely hit new heights if they added Maddison to their squad.

A pairing of Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes, sat behind Maddison, would be one of the best midfield trios in the Premier League. It has a bit of everything, from industry and strength to creative, attacking guile.
If Newcastle can agree a January deal with Leicester, we certainly wouldn’t be surprised to see the Magpies qualify for Europe in 2023.
