Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud comes on as a substitute to replace Francis Coquelin
Francis Coquelin turned in surely his worst ever performance in an Arsenal shirt last night – at the worst possible time.
The Frenchman built his reputation as a midfield destroyer when he broke through in 2015, but he has not quite recaptured this sparkling form.
Last night may be his lowest ebb since being involved in the 8-2 loss to Manchester United in 2011, but at least that game he had inexperience as an excuse.
He was anonymous against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena, unable to prevent his side crashing to a 5-1 defeat.
Coquelin’s game was summed up by the way he backed off Arjen Robben and allowed him to turn inside for the game’s opener, and he did not improve.
He was substituted after 77 minutes, and left the field with embarrassing statistics befitting of his substitute replacement.
| Accurate Passes | Won Tackles | Mins Played | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Francis Coquelin | 6 | 0 | 77 |
Coquelin completed only seven passes and did not win a single tackle, supposedly his greatest attribute.
He was not the only player to let himself down, with Alex Iwobi and Mesut Ozil just as anonymous, but there have to be real questions emerging now over whether the Frenchman deserves a first team spot.
Here is a look at how Arsenal fans reacted on Twitter to his display…
