Well, Michael Edwards doesn’t often make mistakes at Liverpool.
You need a lot more than 10 fingers to tally up the outstanding transfer deals that the Liverpool director of football has engineered down the years.
Whether it’s incomings or outgoings, the Reds invariably find themselves having done stellar business.
However, Taiwo Awoniyi might just be the exception to that rule.
Grass proving a lot greener
The Anfield outfit sold the big Nigerian striker for only £6.5 million last summer [Goal] and, well, he’s been ripping up German football this season.
Awoniyi, who never made a senior appearance for Liverpool due to recurring work permit problems, has netted 16 goals across all competitions this season [Transfermarkt].
For context, Roberto Firmino has only managed to score nine in all competitions under Jurgen Klopp this season.
Not that Awoniyi is a better footballer than the Brazil international, but he is proving himself a very effective goalscorer with Union Berlin.
And remember, he’s only 24.
There’s every chance that Awoniyi is going to get a lot better over the coming years.
Edwards is leaving Liverpool this summer and he’s destined to leave behind a phenomenal legacy.
But maybe – just maybe – Awoniyi will haunt the Reds’ transfer guru.
