Back in July, Liverpool agreed to sell Taiwo Awoniyi to Union Berlin in a deal worth £6.5m, after he spent a season-long loan with the German outfit.
Now, the Reds are probably kicking themselves that they let the Nigerian leave Anfield, as he has thrived in the Bundesliga.
What’s the story?
Well, Awoniyi never played for Liverpool, as he struggled to obtain a work permit during his time on Merseyside.
When he was eventually granted one back in the summer, he was sold.
Now, the 24-year-old has scored nine goals in 16 Bundesliga appearances this season, putting him up there with some of Europe’s biggest names.
Awoniyi is just four goals behind Borussia Dortmund marksman Erling Haaland, sitting fourth in the Bundesliga scoring charts.
Robert Lewandowski leads the way with 18 goals in 16 games.
Did Liverpool include Taiwo Awoniyi buyback clause?

Sadly, Michael Edwards did not include a buyback clause in the deal which saw Awoniyi join Union Berlin.
However, Liverpool did include a 10% sell-on clause in the agreement, which Goal describe as a key factor seeing as those at Anfield believe he will return to the Premier League one day.
Despite him never kicking a ball for the Reds, the signing of Awoniyi was still a great example of Liverpool’s fine recruitment skills.

He was signed for just £400,000 as one for the future, and, as aforesaid, was sold for £6.5m – that is simply fantastic business.
It must be said, Liverpool managed to maintain the value of their asset well through their use of loans amid the striker’s work permit issues.
Hopefully, Awoniyi continues to thrive in Germany.
