Rangers striker Kemar Roofe was delighted to win the Scottish Premiership last season and end the Gers’ decade-long wait to regain the league title – but insists it is “history” now and urged his teammates to continue trying to get even better.

The Light Blues romped to the Premiership title with a 25-point lead over rivals Celtic and Roofe confessed he “can’t not be happy” after getting his hands on silverware.

However, with the Light Blues two weeks away from kicking off their title defence, Roofe knows the Gers can’t afford to rest on their laurels.

“I am happy with it, and I can’t not be happy with it when we have won the league. That is a massive thing for us and it was the main objective,” Roofe told Rangers TV.

“But we can’t just live off that now – that is in the past and that is history and we need to keep trying to improve every year.”

Roofe will be crucial to Rangers’ title hopes this season

The former Leeds and Anderlecht star made a massive impact during his debut season at Ibrox, scoring 18 times in 36 appearances for Steven Gerrard’s side.

With the addition of Fashion Sakala to the squad this summer, it will increase the competition for places and should push the likes of Roofe on to another level.

As Gerrard’s Rangers stars also look ahead to getting their bid to reach the Champions League underway, it’s a massive season at Ibrox.

Winning the title last season was massive but with this season’s Scottish champions essentially guaranteed Champions League group stage access next season, winning 56 would, arguably, be an even bigger success for Rangers.

While 55 is ‘history’ there is still one last bit of celebrating to be done when the Light Blues unfurl the league flag at Ibrox against Livingston on the opening day of the Premiership campaign.
