Sven Botman has been praised for his latest clean sheet at Newcastle United.

And interestingly, the praise has come from a player linked with a transfer to St James’s Park in August.

According to journalist Dean Jones, speaking to Give Me Sport, Newcastle were considering a move for the £52 million-rated [JF] Lille hitman Jonathan David a couple of months ago.

David played alongside Botman for the Ligue 1 outfit.

And responding to the Dutchman’s Instagram post following a 4-0 drubbing of Aston Villa on Saturday, the Canadian wrote: “Mr. Clean sheet.”

It remains to be seen if Newcastle make an attempt to sign David, particularly given that Alexander Isak was recruited in a club-record £60 million deal toward the end of the summer transfer window.

But with Botman proving himself a massive success in the Premier League so far, it’ll certainly help Eddie Howe land future transfer targets.

The Netherlands Under-21 international is someone who could’ve had his pick of clubs in a year or two, based on his trajectory in football.

And the fact that he – and Bruno Guimaraes in January – punted for the St James’s Park outfit is testament to what Howe and Dan Ashworth are building on Tyneside.

The Magpies are fourth in the Premier League table and on course for a shock Champions League qualification spot at the moment, even if it’s still early.

The future is bright at Newcastle and although David might never experience it, other transfer targets will want to.
