David Selke rejected a move to Ibrox to join Rangers in the summer but now, German outlet Bild claim the striker has handed in a transfer request ahead of the January window – and Rangers can save their season with his addition.
Selke, 27, is struggling for game time at Hertha. He has started just three of Hertha’s 14 Bundesliga matches this term. It comes after interest from Rangers among other clubs in the summer window, but he chose to reject the Ibrox club.
That is according to German site Bild. They say that Rangers, West Brom, Basel, Copenhagen and Turkish and Greek clubs were keen. However, he chose to stay. But he has performed a u-turn, now handing in a transfer request.
With his contract expiring next summer, Selke is keen on leaving Hertha in January and has handed in a request. Rangers are struggling – and while Antonio Colak is scoring goals, the Ibrox club need something else in the final third.
Rangers can save their season with Selke addition
It has been woeful for Rangers so far. Giovanni van Bronckhorst is under huge pressure, following last weekend’s loss to St. Johnstone. Seven points behind Celtic, and the worst-ever team in Champions League group stage history.
They need a spark. They need a signing that can give fans hope. Selke can be that man. The £51k-a-week striker has now made himself available in January. More than five years after his £7million move to Hertha Berlin in 2017.
So, having rejected Rangers in the summer in order to stay at Hertha, he wants to go. Rangers need a player like Selke. A player with speed, goals, ability to play out wide or up top – and standing at 6ft 4in. In January, he will be available.
Indeed, Hertha will want a bit of cash for his signature. But it will be a small figure given he was bought for £7million, and out of contract next summer. So, if Rangers want to catch Celtic, they should go back in for the cut-price Selke.
