Could Celtic be about to let these two players leave Parkhead at the end of the season?
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers
With the January window now a distant memory and the summer starting to emerge on the horizon, HITC Sport has compiled a list of the 50 best players who are set to become free agents at the end of the season. And in this piece, we take a closer look at the Celtic pair who have made it onto the list.
Of the pair currently heading for the Parkhead exit as things stand, Kris Commons is surely more likely to call time on his Hoops career this summer.
The Daily Record suggested last month that the 33-year-old may simply be given a chance by Brendan Rodgers as a way to say a goodbye to the Hoops fans as his contract runs down, which certainly suggests that a new deal will not be put on the table.
It is a sad end for the attacker who had enjoyed an excellent time in Scotland since his arrival in 2011. Commons has scored 64 goals in 148 league games for Celtic, but is still awaiting his first appearance under Rodgers. Perhaps, when the title is wrapped up, the former Derby man will get his chance, but it seems that he will have to do incredibly well to prolong his time with the club.
Celtic’s Kris Commons
Meanwhile, he could be joined heading out of the Parkhead door by Emilio Izaguirre. Unlike Commons, the left-back has featured fairly often this season, but predominantly because of Kieran Tierney’s injury earlier in the campaign.
It would certainly be fair to argue that the Honduran’s future will be on Rodgers’ mind for longer than Commons’ would right now.
Celtic’s Emilio Izaguirre
The 30-year-old is arguably one of the best full-backs in Scotland, but is unlucky that the very best is in the same team and has the potential to leave all of his rivals behind completely.
And with The Sun reporting in January that Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday were both battling for his signature, the lack of first-team football may tempt Izaguirre to seek a new challenge where he is more likely to be considered a key player.
