Tyler Roberts has confidently claimed to The Yorkshire Evening Post that he and his Leeds United team-mates believe that they’ll be a match for the Premier League.
It’s been a week since the Whites’ promotion back to the top flight was confirmed following a 16-year absence.
In that time, Leeds have almost gone out of business and also had a stint in League One.
But they won the Championship with 93 points this week and big things are expected of them in the Premier League.
Despite being in the second tier for so long, United have an extremely well-esteemed coach in the form of Marcelo Bielsa, who has managed Argentina’s national team, Lazio and Athletic Bilbao among others.
Bielsa’s presence, coupled with the fact that promotion is worth nine figures to Leeds, is the reason why they’re being tipped to have a successful first year back in the big time.
And Roberts, a £4 million signing in 2018, has told The YEP that he goes along with that idea, saying they’ll ‘do well’ up there.
He said: “We’ll be working hard and looking forward to showing what we can do. I wasn’t involved in the game against Arsenal but we’ve shown that we can compete at the top level already.
“We’ll go in there next season with our heads held high and we’ll give it our best. I’m sure that we’ll do well.”
It’ll be fascinating to see Bielsa rub shoulders with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, who has spoken glowingly about the veteran Argentine coach in the past, along with Mauricio Pochettino.
The 65-year-old has a lot of clout in the game and it’s not only a big season for Leeds; it’s big for Bielsa, too.
