Leeds interviewed Nuno Espirito Santo back in February after deciding to hand Jesse Marsch his P45 at Elland Road.
It was The Times who claimed that Leeds spoke to the Portuguese tactician about moving to Yorkshire, as he was keen on a return to English football.
Andrea Radrizzani eventually decided to hire Javi Gracia instead as Nuno would have cost £5.3m in compensation – a move which turned into a disaster with Sam Allardyce now at the helm, as Leeds teeter on the brink of relegation.
However – if they are still interested – Leeds could now end up hiring Nuno Espirito Santo for free this summer.
What’s the story?
Well, Allardyce is not expected to stay at Elland Road beyond this season, so the hunt for a new manager is likely to resume this summer – now, Nuno seems to be an option.
According to Rudy Galetti, the 49-year-old has asked to leave Al-Ittihad, as some are interested in hiring him and he is interested in their proposals.
Leeds are not mentioned, although after talks were held in February, it certainly isn’t unrealistic to assume that the Whites could be involved as they prepare for life after Allardyce.
Nuno should appeal to Leeds even if relegation occurs
Nuno would surely appeal to Leeds regardless of what division they find themselves in next season.
The São Tomé-born coach helped get Wolves into the Premier League, and then proceeded to qualify for the UEFA Europa League at Molineux, where the Old Gold reached the Quarter-Final in the 2019/20 campaign.
With a proven track record of success in both the Premier League and the Championship, we feel Nuno should be among the leading candidates to replace Allardyce no matter what happens between now and the end of the season.
