Tottenham Hotspur suffered a surprise defeat at home to West Brom at the weekend, with an all-too familiar narrative.

After a Europa League away game, Spurs put in a display lacking any kind of spark, failing to ignite life into a home crowd, who watched on frustratingly as they lost to a team they would be expected to beat.

It has happened on several occasions before, in some cases a draw rather than a loss, and there is no easy answer.

A new manager has taken over, again, and left key players at home, rested up ahead of the Premier League match.

Another route to consider, is that the players are simply not up to scratch. A case in point Tottenham striker Emmanuel Adebayor, who completed a paltry 46 per cent of his passes, by far his worst of the season.

The Togo international registered only one shot against the Baggies, but failed to hit the target.

It was a disinterested performance Spurs have come to recognise from Adebayor, and while he was not the only under-performer on Sunday, he was one of the most notable.

There was a reason why there were a section of Spurs fans disappointed by their inability to sign Danny Welbeck on deadline day, and it wasn’t the Arsenal striker’s talent.

It was that they desire to see a consistent striker signed to lead the line, capable of performing week in and week out.

That was something they thought they had bought in Roberto Soldado, but those who believe in the Spaniard to fulfil his hefty price tag are now few and far between.
