Borussia Dortmund defender Dan-Axel Zagadou is on Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho’s wish list for the January transfer window, according to 90Min.

Spurs are still on the look-out for a quality centre-half to replace Jan Vertonghen, who left the club in the summer. Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier are Mourinho’s undisputed first-choice options, but the alternatives have yet to step up to the plate.

Davinson Sanchez has made errors when he has played while Joe Rodon has yet to gain the experience required to be a regular at the top level. Japhet Tanganga is an excellent option but last week Mourinho told Spurs News he sees the England youth international as more of a right-back.

Tottenham want to bring in a central defender in January and 90Min claims Zagadou is a player they rate highly. The Frenchman is one of the Bundesliga’s most talented young centre-backs and has caught the attention of a number of clubs.

Standing 6ft 5in, Zagadou is fantastic in the air, can slot into a back three or four and, like Vertonghen, can play in his natural centre-back position as well as left-back.

Zagadou’s injury history

Zagadou has all the components to be a top-quality defender. Still only 21, he has a lot of time to develop – but early signs reveal he’s also injury-prone.

Since joining Borussia Dortmund in summer 2017, Zagadou has played 60 games in all competitions. However, he has missed 46 games due to injury.

The 21-year-old has had his unfair share of muscular problems but his knee has been the biggest issue. He ruptured his knee ligament in April this year and has been out of action since.

Zagadou has the talent and it’s no surprise someone like Mourinho is looking at him. However, his injury history could mean Tottenham keep their wallet in their pocket come January.
