Back in June 2021, Crystal Palace were trying to replace Roy Hodgson, and had shortlisted the likes of Nuno Espirito Santo, Lucien Favre and Marco Silva.
The south Londoners even sat down for an interview with the latter, after a deal for Espirito Santo collapsed.
At the time, it was said that some at Crystal Palace had been left impressed by Silva, and preferred him to Favre.
Eventually, it was Patrick Vieira who got the nod, presumably due to fears over Silva’s struggles at Watford and Everton.
Now, however, the 44-year-old has shown exactly why the Eagles were thinking about handing him a contract.
What’s the story?
Well, the Portuguese coach has now been named Championship Manager of the Year, after guiding Fulham to the title.
Silva did so by overseeing an incredible 106 goals from the Cottagers, which earned Fulham a +63 goal difference.
Fulham also won 27 of their 46 games, drawing nine, as they won the title with 90 points – two ahead of Bournemouth.
Clearly, Silva is a bright coach, and it will be interesting to see how he does with Fulham in the Premier League next season.
Crystal Palace made correct call on Marco Silva
As well as he’s done this season, there were no guarantees that Silva would’ve enjoyed similar success at Crystal Palace.
As aforesaid, he has struggled in his previous roles in the Premier League with Watford and Everton, receiving the sack from both jobs.
He also suffered relegation with Hull, although he cannot be solely blamed for that having arrived during the middle of the season.
After all, the Eagles opted for Vieira, who guided them to 12th in the Premier League, an FA Cup semi-final and also a positive goal difference.
The south Londoners were the only side in the bottom half to finish with a positive goal difference, which speaks volumes.
Despite Silva’s award, Crystal Palace can be proud of their appointment.
