Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has refused to be drawn on the manager situation in North London.

Spurs’ pursuit of a Jose Mourinho replacement took another twist on Thursday when it was widely revealed that their move to hire Paulo Fonseca had collapsed.

Immediately after that, Tuttomercatoweb reported that Gennaro Gattuso was now expected to become Tottenham’s next head coach.

Bear in mind that Levy had tried and failed to get Brendan Rodgers, Julian Nagelsmann, Mauricio Pochettino and Antonio Conte, prior to the bombshell about Fonseca.

TMW this morning reported that Gattuso is now ‘one step away’ from being named as Mourinho’s successor in North London.

But Levy, speaking to the same publication, was typically reserved when discussing the matter.

He told TMW: “We never comment on rumours. We’ve been linked with 30 different coaches in the last period. Until we make an announcement it is just speculation.”

Asked about Gattuso directly, Levy added: “Of course, him too.”

Livid

Spurs fans are livid – and rightly so.

When Levy sacked Mourinho days before a League Cup final, their chance to end a 13-year trophy drought, it was wise to assume that the Tottenham chief already had a replacement lined up.

But that was two months ago and it does appear very much like Levy is making this up as he goes along.

Most Lilywhites fans weren’t even happy with Fonseca, but he is a bigger name that Gattuso – who quit as Fiorentina coach after only two weeks yesterday – in the world of management.

Missing out on another coach and turning to someone relatively random like Gattuso doesn’t inspire confidence that Levy ever had a concrete plan when Mourinho left.
