Jonjo Shelvey has been outstanding for Newcastle this season, but the weekend was not one of his better games.
Newcastle United’s Jonjo Shelvey receives a Yellow Card after this challenge on Huddersfield Town’s Isaiah Brown
Jonjo Shelvey has been a key player for Newcastle United this season as they bid to return to the Premier League at the first attempt.
He gave away a second half penalty against Huddersfield, which gave the Terriers hope at 2-1 before a late Newcastle goal from Dwight Gayle put the result beyond doubt.
Shelvey’s biggest problem was his passing, which was seriously off kilter.
He managed just a 43 per cent pass completion rate, the lowest of any player on the pitch.
Shelvey’s game can focus on trying to find the killer through ball to slice open defences, but he was particularly wasteful against Huddersfield and failed to create a single chance.

Shelvey can, and will do better than this. In fact it would be a surprise if he records statistics quite this terrible again at Newcastle this season.
This campaign he has netted four league goals and provided seven assists. Newcastle fans can forgive the odd below par performance, especially when they sit pretty at the top of the division.
