Davinson Sanchez has admitted to Sky Sports that Tottenham Hotspur have been nowhere near good enough this year.
At the time of football being suspended in England, Spurs were eighth in the Premier League table and seven points adrift in the race for a top-four finish.
In addition to that, Tottenham, who had been without Harry Kane since the New Year’s Day due to a hamstring injury, got eliminated from the FA Cup and Champions League within six days of each other.
In the latter competition, a 4-0 aggregate defeat by Leipzig put paid to the North Londoners’ hopes of going one better and winning Europe’s elite tournament following their final defeat by Liverpool last year.
Jose Mourinho’s side went into this hiatus having won only one game of seven in all competitions.
And Sanchez, a £42 million signing in 2017 [The Guardian], has admitted that he and his team-mates simply weren’t good enough.
He told Sky Sports: “I think everyone knows as a team we expect to do better.
“The Premier League is always hard but we need to improve, that’s why we put so much work in every day, we’ll see what’s going to happen but looking back we can’t play like we were doing before.”
Obviously Sanchez is right.
Considering Tottenham got to a Champions League final 12 months ago, to be eighth in the Premier League a year later is bizarre.
Mourinho has only been in the job for about six months, so he deserves time to put his own stamp on things.
