Danny Murphy has claimed that Steven Gerrard has his heart set on the Liverpool job.
The 41-year-old has proven himself a revelation up at Rangers since moving to Glasgow in the summer of 2018.
Not only has Gerrard re-established the Gers as a big club in Europe – the Europa League, at least.
But he lead Rangers to a Premiership title last season, stopping Celtic’s 10-in-a-row bid in the process.
However, being an iconic figure at Liverpool during his playing days, Gerrard surely has designs on returning to Anfield as manager at some point in the future.
He has been tentatively linked with the Newcastle job but Danny Murphy, who played alongside the legend at Liverpool, claims that his old teammate only has eyes for the Reds, noting that it’s his ‘ultimate ambition’.
He told talkSPORT: “His ultimate ambition, and I know he is focused on Rangers, is to manage Liverpool Football Club. Now, if you go to Newcastle and it doesn’t go well and you mess it up, he might just jeopardise that opportunity, and he’s not going to do that.”
Realistic?
In a word, absolutely.
There’s nobody who Liverpool fans would love to see more in the dugout than Gerrard, after Jurgen Klopp of course.
The German manager is contracted to Liverpool until 2024 and it has been suggested that he could walk away from Anfield then.
But if Murphy is right in saying that if Gerrard leaves Rangers and winds up failing at Newcastle, Fenway Sports Group can’t possibly consider him for the post-Klopp role.
For now, Gerrard managing Liverpool is a very real prospect but he must bide his time and not jump at the first big Premier League job that comes his way.
