Leeds United are now set to pounce for Gretar Steinsson as their new technical director following his Tottenham Hotspur exit.

Gretar Steinsson has left Tottenham Hotspur and looks set for a return to football with Leeds United.

That is according to the Daily Mail, who claim that Steinsson is expected to join Leeds very soon.

It’s claimed that Steinsson was spotted at Leeds last week ahead of being appointed at Elland Road.

Steinsson is expected to be given the role of technical director, playing a key role in Leeds’ recruitment setup.

Leeds axed director of football Victor Orta towards the end of last season and have seen him become Sevilla’s sporting director.

There may still be scope for another appointment to work alongside Steinsson amid rumours surrounding Norwich City sporting director Stuart Webber.

Who is Leeds United target Gretar Steinsson?

Steinsson may be a familiar name to Premier League fans after his playing career with Bolton Wanderers.

The former Iceland international joined Bolton from AZ Alkmaar in 2006 and went on to play more than 125 times for the Trotters.

A right back as a player, Steinsson finished up with Kayserispor in 2013 before turning to recruitment.

Steinsson first returned to former club AZ before a shock move to become technical director at Fleetwood Town.

Steinsson moved on in 2018, reuniting with Marcel Brands at Everton having known each other at AZ.

Head of Recruitment and Development was Steinsson’s role at Everton before he left the club alongside Brands in 2021.

Tottenham pounced to land Steinsson last summer, appointing the 41-year-old as performance director under Fabio Paratici.

The London Evening Standard reported in June that Steinsson would be leaving the club with Spurs revamping their setup following Paratici’s exit.

Now available to move on, it looks like Steinsson won’t be out of the game long as he nears a move to Leeds United.
