Wolves are taking a gamble on Raul Jimenez, but it’s a low risk one.

Wolves are on the verge of signing Raul Jimenez on loan from Benfica, SkySports report.

Jimenez has a mixed record for the Portuguese side over the past three seasons, but he is a player who Wolves are confident enough to take a punt on.

Nothing highlights his value as a bargain more than Everton’s reported desire to spend £40 million on Jimenez a year ago.

Portuguese newspaper Record reported last summer that the Toffees were ready to make what at the time would have been a club record bid for the Mexican.

Jimenez certainly seemed overpriced at that figure, but it showed how highly he was regarded.

Everton were ultimately sensible not to pay up, but that is not to say Jimenez will not be a success in the Premier League.

Wolves are acting shrewdly to ‘try before you buy’ with a low risk loan deal which means they are not putting the 27-year-old under huge pressure from the start.

He has a lot to do if he is going to convince Everton they were wrong not to splash out a huge fee, but they could go on to regret not pulling off a clever loan switch like Wolves have managed to.
