Atletico Madrid are reportedly open to selling striker Kevin Gameiro to Tottenham Hotspur.
Atletico Madrid striker Kevin Gameiro celebrates
According to The Mirror, Atletico Madrid have sounded Tottenham out over a possible summer deal for striker Kevin Gameiro.
Gameiro, 29, smashed 67 goals in just 144 games for Sevilla following a 2013 move from Paris Saint-Germain, and helped the La Liga side win three successive Europa League titles.
Last summer though, the French international decided it was time to move on, and joined Spanish rivals Atletico Madrid in a deal worth £28million (The Guardian).
A proven goalscorer in Spain and in Europe, Gameiro was seen as a huge signing for Atletico given how previous striker signings such as Raul Jimenez, Mario Mandzukic, Luciano Vietto and Jackson Martinez struggled to impress under Diego Simeone.
So far, Gameiro has started 15 of Atletico’s 23 La Liga games and just of their six Champions League encounters, with 11 goals to his name in all competitions this term – meaning it’s now 40 goals in his last 85 games in club football.
Despite hitting a hat-trick in just five minutes against Sporting Gijon this weekend, The Mirror report that Atletico are open to cashing in on Gameiro this summer, and have sounded Tottenham out to discuss a possible deal.
Atletico Madrid’s Kevin Gameiro shoots
Spurs have seen Harry Kane continue his goalscoring prowess this season, but Vincent Janssen has struggled to offer a goal threat behind him, and Tottenham may look to splash the cash on another striker at the end of the season.
Gameiro would fit the bill as a proven goalscorer, and whilst he could reunite with international team-mates Hugo Lloris and Moussa Sissoko at White Hart Lane, it may not be a deal chairman Daniel Levy is too keen on.
Atletico would almost certainly want to recoup a considerable chunk of the money they paid for Gameiro less than a year ago, and paying almost £30million for a 29-year-old striker doesn’t exactly fit the Spurs model of developing younger players under manager Mauricio Pochettino, meaning this move would be a surprise.
