Liverpool took the kind of blow champions aren’t supposed to suffer against Aston Villa last time out.

That 7-2 defeat led to questions about Jurgen Klopp’s side which simply weren’t being asked last season.

All that adds a layer of intrigue to tomorrow’s Merseyside derby and the outcome of that game could shape Liverpool’s next couple of weeks.

If that result teaches us anything, it’s that predictions this season are very hard to make but we’ve had a stab for Liverpool’s next five matches…

Everton (A) – Draw

In previous seasons, Liverpool drawing 0-0 at Goodison Park may well have been a source of frustration.

After the start to the season, a draw against Carlo Ancelotti’s men wouldn’t be the world’s worst result.

It would calm down some of the euphoria going on on the blue half of Merseyside and restore some defensive confidence after the Villa game.

These matches have been low-scoring in recent years, and that may well suit Klopp tomorrow.

Ajax (A) – Win

This isn’t the same Ajax side which took Europe by storm in 2019 and came within a whisker of facing Liverpool in that year’s Champions League final.

The top talent from that side has been sold across Europe and without fans in, the Amsterdam Arena isn’t such a menacing prospect.

Liverpool will be looking to get their European campaign off to a flier and should manage to do exactly that.

Sheffield United (H) – Win

Chris Wilder’s side haven’t started the season on the best of form, struggling to replicate the intensity which made them last season’s surprise package.

That should make this a home win, with Klopp’s side more than capable of matching the Blades’ hard running even if they can reach last season’s levels.

Dean Henderson kept Sheffield United in it at Anfield last season; he’s not there this time around and Aaron Ramsdale hasn’t quite replaced him to the same level of performance yet.

Midtjylland (H) – Win

This is about as straightforward as it gets in terms of Liverpool’s Champions League group.

It won’t be easy – and Jurgen Klopp has to rotate his options effectively – but Liverpool should have too much in attack.

Liverpool’s away form in the group stage of the Champions League hasn’t been outstanding in recent seasons, so it’s imperative they win their home games.

They should do that here.

Liverpool’s trophies under Jurgen Klopp

  1. Champions League

    2018/19

  2. UEFA Super Cup

    2019

  3. FIFA Club World Cup

    2019

  4. Premier League

    2019/20

West Ham (H) – Win

The Hammers gave Liverpool a fright at Anfield last season and are set up in a counter-attacking style which lends itself to bloodying the noses of elite clubs.

That said, you’d fancy Klopp to outwit David Moyes and beat a side who have a frightfully tough start to the season.

Liverpool don’t slip up very often at Anfield at all and it would be a surprise if West Ham were the team who put an end to that.
