Alassane Plea’s recent performances in the Bundesliga should have Tottenham and Newcastle both wondering if they should have tried harder to sign him this summer.
SkySports reported that Newcastle made an attempt to sign Plea, with Spurs also interested.
He ended up joining Borussia Moenchengladbach instead, and has not looked back.
After scoring a hat-trick on his cup debut against lower league opposition, Plea has had success in the Bundesliga.
In his last six top flight games he has four goals, including the opener in a shock 3-0 away win over Bayern Munich at the weekend.
His 16 goals for Nice last season, often playing from the wing to support Mario Balotelli, was a significant haul and sparked the summer interest in his signature.
He has five goals in nine games overall for Bundesliga, more than Robert Lewandowski has managed for Bayern so far.
Talksport reported that Gladbach paid £22 million for Plea.
This would have been a club record fee for Newcastle, but early evidence suggests he would have been worth it.
Tottenham too could have done with him, considering their lack of options in attack behind Harry Kane, and early signs are that he would not have looked out of place in their side.
