Dele Alli missed Tottenham Hotspur’s win over Borussia Dortmund in midweek but came straight back into the team for Saturday’s game against Swansea.
Unfortunately for Alli it was not the triumphant return to the side he had hoped for.
Since scoring on the first day of the season against Newcastle, Alli is yet to score or provide an assist and against Swansea he appeared to be lacking a spark.
Against Swansea he managed to create four chances, his joint second ever highest tally in a Tottenham shirt, yet behind the statistics, Alli appeared a player who is reaching for his best form rather than finding it.
Spurs appeared a more cohesive side in midweek without Alli, and Mauricio Pochettino could soon have to ask questions – at what point does he drop the England man if he does not start scoring soon.
Alli had three attempts on goal but they were all off target, and perhaps that’s the problem, he is trying too hard.
Spurs will have more successful days than their game against Swansea, and Alli is serving a tough lesson right now with his Champions League ban – of which he has two more games to serve for his dismissal against Gent last season.
Alli is right to be frustrated with himself, but he needs to start showing why he is regarded as one of the brightest midfield talents in Europe.
