Tottenham Hotspur’s move for an experienced and proven striker has failed with Fernando Llorente.

While he may step up with a late flourish over the next few weeks, his first 18 months at the club have been disappointing.

Tottenham need to sign a top strike option for the future and Red Bull Leipzig forward Jean-Kevin Augustin fits the bill.

Spurs were interested in the former PSG youngster before he left for Germany two years ago.

Now he is attracting interest from Tottenham’s Premier League competitors.

Everton are keen, The Sun reported last month. The same paper now report Wolves and Southampton want to sign the Frenchman.

The 21-year-old scored 11 goals in his first season with Leipzig. This season he has eight goals to his name.

The young forward has been a regular scorer for France at under-21 level and he is the type of prospect Mauricio Pochettino should enjoy working with.

The big problem is Leipzig’s reported £38 million fee, which Daniel Levy would try to negotiate down.

If Spurs could get the German side down to more like £25 million, Augustin would seem like a more reasonable outlay.

With rival Premier League clubs sniffing around, Spurs should keep the striker on their shortlist and consider making their own move.
