Bayern Munich have confirmed the signing of Dayot Upamecano.

It was reported in the Guardian on Friday that Chelsea and Liverpool were both keen on the defender, but he has made his decision and will remain in the Bundesliga.

The 22-year-old centre-back is one of European football’s most highly-rated young talents, and he’ll link up with his new club on July 1.

Bayern triggered the £37.2m release clause in the Frenchman’s contract with RB Leipzig, who face Liverpool in the last 16 of the Champions League on Tuesday.

As quoted on Bayern’s official website, the club’s sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said: “We’re happy that we’ve been able to sign Dayot Upamecano for FC Bayern München.

“We’re convinced that Dayot will be a very important member of our team in the coming years.”

Upamecano has signed a five-year deal with the champions.

It’s been a frustrating weekend for Liverpool, who were 12 minutes away from a commendable 1-0 victory against Leicester before spectacularly capitulating.

It finished 3-1 to Brendan Rodgers’ side at the King Power, and after his side fell 13 points behind league leaders Manchester City Jurgen Klopp conceded that their hopes of retaining the title are over.

As quoted by BBC Sport, he said: “I don’t think we can close the gap. We are not worrying about the title, we are not silly.

“We have to win football games and big parts of the football were really good.

“We scored a great goal but conceded a strange one and I think it’s offside, and the (goal for) 2-1 is a misunderstanding. That had too big an impact on the game.

“We had to show a different reaction, and the third we gave away too easily.

“We have to avoid mistakes and misunderstandings. Today we didn’t do that. The rest of the game was really good.

“First we have to perform again – results are massively related to the performance.”
