Why Tottenham should look give Alex Pritchard a chance rather than spend on Demarai Gray.
Birmingham City prospect Demarai Gray is the latest name to be linked with Tottenham, with The Telegraph reporting head of recruitment Paul Mitchell personally scouted him earlier this month.
The Telegraph report Gray is available at £3.75 million, a small fee for an England youth international who they may hope can have a similar type of impact to Dele Alli.
There is one issue though, and that is Tottenham’s own youth product, Alex Pritchard, who deserves a chance in the first team and plays in the same attacking midfield role as Gray.
With Christian Eriksen first choice and Mousa Dembele also capable of featuring in the role, opportunities would be limited for both Gray and Pritchard.
Injury has delayed Pritchard’s progress this season but he is due back next month.
Last season he impressed on loan at Brentford, and had a superior record to Gray’s performances both last season and this.
| Team | Season | Won Tackles per game | Shots per game | Passing Accuracy | Key Passes per game | Successful Final Third Passes per game | Assists | Goals | Appearances | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alex Pritchard | Brentford | 2014-2015 | 1.26 | 3 | 77% | 2.45 | 17.34 | 7 | 12 | 47 |
| Demarai Gray | Birmingham | 2015-2016 | 0.82 | 2.91 | 77% | 1.27 | 6.45 | 1 | 1 | 22 |
| Demarai Gray | Birmingham | 2014-2015 | 0.71 | 1.88 | 76% | 1.05 | 4.63 | 1 | 6 | 41 |
Pritchard’s performances last season better Gray’s last season and this in pretty much every key category, and he is far more influential in the final third of the pitch.
He accumulated more goals and assists last season than the Birmingham youngster has in a year and a half.
In Gray’s defence, he is three years younger than Pritchard, and is still an excellent prospect. But signing him must not come at the expense of a player who was on the cusp of breaking into the Tottenham first team when fit.
