Jimmy Butler has joined a rare and unwanted list after suffering a torn ACL at age 36, making him one of the oldest NBA players in nearly two decades to endure the injury.

The veteran forward’s setback marks a devastating moment in his second season with the Golden State Warriors, raising questions about what comes next for his career.

ACL tears aren’t uncommon among players beyond their mid-30s, given the demands of recovery and the physical decline that often follows. Butler’s injury now places him in unfortunate company within NBA history.

Jimmy Butler joins a short list of NBA veterans with ACL tears

Since the start of the 2005–06 season, only one player older than Butler has suffered a torn ACL, 38-year-old Chris Andersen, who sustained the injury during the 2016–17 campaign. Butler now becomes the second-oldest player in that 20-year span to face the same fate.

The six-time All-Star, known for his intensity and leadership, has been one of the league’s most durable competitors across 15 seasons. His ability to push through fatigue and physical battles has defined his career, making the injury all the more shocking.

Butler was averaging steady minutes for Golden State and remained a key defensive anchor before the setback. The injury occurred during the Warriors’ regular-season matchup vs. the Miami Heat.

What the injury means for Jimmy Butler’s future with the Warriors

The timing of Butler’s ACL tear could spell trouble for the remainder of his NBA career. Recovery from such an injury typically ranges from 9 to 12 months, and for a player in his mid-30s, the return-to-form rate is considerably lower.

For the Warriors, Butler’s absence leaves a major gap in both production and experience. The franchise brought him in to add defensive leadership and playoff grit, qualities that will now be missing as Golden State navigates its transition phase.

While Butler’s commitment and work ethic are unquestioned, the path back from a major knee injury at 36 is steep.

If this proves to be the final chapter of his playing days, it would end one of the most relentless careers of the modern NBA era, one defined by effort, resilience, and an unshakable competitive edge.
