Danny Drinkwater has expressed his desire to rejoin Leicester City.

As reported by The Mirror, free agent Danny Drinkwater is keen to return to Leicester City this summer, where he enjoyed the finest years of his career as a player to date.

Drinkwater is an icon at the King Power Stadium, as he played a vital role in the Foxes’ iconic Premier League title triumph of 2016. The midfielder’s fine form in that historic season earned him his three senior England international caps, and at the end of the following campaign he joined Chelsea in a deal worth £35 million.

However, Drinkwater’s time at Stamford Bridge was a disaster. Across five seasons on the books with the Blues, he managed just 12 Premier League appearances, all coming in his first campaign. He has also had loan stints with Burnley, Aston Villa, and Turkish club Kasimpasa. However, it wasn’t until joining Championship side Reading for 2021/22 season that he enjoyed anything like regular football again. He has now been without a club for a year since the expiry of his Chelsea deal.

Leicester shouldn’t consider Drinkwater

Whilst a return to Leicester seems like the romantic move for Drinkwater, there is no way Enzo Maresca should consider it. After relegation last season, the Foxes will be desperate to secure promotion in the upcoming campaign. They know they face a tough challenge to do so. Improvements this summer are necessary. A 33-year-old Drinkwater, who has barely played in five years, isn’t going to take them closer to achieving their aims.

Former Foxes boss, Claudio Ranieri, once hailed Drinkwater as “a fantastic player…an important player for us.” However, so much has changed since those days.

Drinkwater’s past with the club is something to celebrate. The idea of a reunion is something to avoid at all costs.
