According to The Chronicle, Newcastle’s Paul Dummett has suffered a setback in his recovery from a muscle problem which he picked up over the summer.
The full-back last played under Steve Bruce in a 1-1 draw against Wolves on January 11th, a game in which he did not finish after limping off with a tendon injury.
That particular issue ended his season, despite the fact he had recovered by the time lockdown in the United Kingdom had ended.
The Chronicle‘s report states that the Premier League’s rehashed, post-lockdown rules meant the Wales international couldn’t be included in Bruce’s squad.
More bad news has now come Dummett’s way after The Chronicle reveal he has damaged his hamstring, which could rule him out for the rest of the year.
If the problem sidelines him until mid-January, then it’ll mean the left-back – who Spotrac say earns £35,000-a-week at St James’ Park – has missed a whole year of Premier League action.
With his contract set to expire in the summer of 2022 (Transfermarkt), Dummett faces a race against time to prove his fitness and show Bruce that he’s deserving of a new deal.
While the 29-year-old has been missing, the Magpies have spent £15 million on Jamal Lewis to provide added competition to the left-back spot.
Let’s just hope the hamstring injury isn’t a serious one for the Newcastle-born defender.
