Mohamed Salah put pen to paper on a three-year contract extension at Liverpool back in July, following months of speculation about his future.

The Egypt international was set to become a free agent in July 2023, although the Reds moved to make him the highest paid Liverpool player in history at £350,000-a-week and tied him down until 2025.

Speaking after his renewal, Salah focused heavily on wanting to win more trophies at Anfield, while also referring to the attempted quadruple charge last season as reason to extend his contract.

Now, with things looking very miserable on Merseyside, the 30-year-old may now regret that decision.

Salah may regret Liverpool extension

Speaking after signing his new contract, the Liverpool No.11 said: “I feel great and I am excited to win trophies with the club.

“I think you can see in the last five or six years the team was always going upwards. Last season we were close to winning four, but unfortunately in the last week of the season we lost two trophies. I think we are in a good position to fight for everything.”

Unfortunately, the Reds no longer seem to be going upwards.

The situation at Liverpool has changed significantly since Salah extended his contract.

Jürgen Klopp now finds his side languishing in ninth place in the Premier League, with just four wins from their opening 12 games in England’s top-flight, which is certainly not a “good position to fight for everything” as Salah hopes for.

Liverpool could end up wasting Salah

Liverpool only have Salah until July 2025, and in our view, most of that time may be spent needing to overhaul the first-team squad.

Remarkably – due to a lack of investment from Fenway Sports Group (FSG) – Klopp finds himself relying on the likes of 36-year-old James Milner in big games, as well as youngsters like Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho.

They are good players, although Liverpool’s squad needs more beef, especially in the engine room of midfield.

With FSG usually only sanctioning one major signing a year – if that – under Klopp, it could take until 2025 for Liverpool to be back in a position where they can compete for the quadruple once again.

Will Salah stick around to be part of the rebuild, even if it means sacrificing trophies? Only time will tell.
