What did Salt Bae do? Many have asked this after hearing of the famous chef’s embarrassing interaction with Lionel Messi at the World Cup final.

The Turk – whose real name is Nusret Gökçe – became an internet sensation in January 2017 for his method of sprinkling salt on steaks, although the same people who adored him have now turned after he made them cringe in Qatar.

Amid a wave of mockery online, Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Ander Herrera, who is currently on loan at Athletic Bilbao, has now joined in.

So, how did the Spain international mock him? Let’s take a look…

What did Salt Bae do?

Well, footage has gone viral of Salt Bae aggressively tugging Messi’s arm in a desperate attempt to interact with the 35-year-old, after his remarkable World Cup win with Argentina.

You can see a video of the cringeworthy moment below.

Now, Herrera has decided to make fun of the 39-year-old.

The 33-year-old, who PSG signed for free after his contract with Manchester United expired in 2019, reposted Messi’s photo of himself in bed cuddling the World Cup, but edited Salt Bae underneath the covers as well.

It is a clear mockery of Salt Bae getting far too close to Messi in Qatar, on a humiliating evening where he had no right to be snatching the World Cup from the likes of Cristian Romero and Lisandro Martinez.

As you can also see below, that is exactly what the 39-year-old chef did, as the Argentinian duo were attempting to have photographs of their own with the World Cup.

Romero was even holding his son, and you can tell by his face that he is far from amused with Salt Bae trying to muscle in on what is the biggest moment of his footballing career.

Salt Bae banned from U.S Open Cup

In response to seeing Salt Bae pestering the Argentina squad, the U.S Open Cup’s official Twitter account decided to ban him from attending the U.S Open Cup final in 2023.

In truth, we wouldn’t be surprised to see more organisations follow suit.

Salt Bae’s behaviour in Qatar was nothing short of childish, attention seeking nonsense – at one point, he even put Martinez’s medal in his mouth for a photo opportunity without the Manchester United defender’s permission.

The arrogant way in which he acted was as if he had won the World Cup singlehandedly, and hopefully, Salt Bae is never seen again at a major sporting event should he continue to behave like this.
