The Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst was linked with moves to several English sides, notably Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, in the summer transfer window.
It followed a 20-goal season for the Netherlands international, for whom it was claimed Arsenal, Tottenham and co would have to pay £32 million to sign.
The former club ultimately failed to add to their forward line, instead tying their captain and talisman, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, to an improved new contract.
Spurs, on the other hand, were active in Weghorst’s position, although it was not 28-year-old but the Benfica striker, Carlos Vinicius, who eventually arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on an initial loan deal.
Vinicius though, might not have been the Lilywhites’ first choice.
“I will stay in Wolfsburg with all my love,” Weghorst told Kicker this week.
“I can be honest, of course I knew that there was interest left and right. It was serious with Tottenham, I was a candidate.
“Of course you are concerned with something like that too. It is also a confirmation that I’m on the right track.”
“I’m 28 now and I’d like to win titles. I made that clear here. I hope that we improve as a team so that we can possibly do more overall.

“If one day I have the feeling that I cannot achieve my goals at VfL, then I will say so. That is currently not the case.”
But a future move to Arsenal or Tottenham cannot be ruled out.
“The Premier League is still a dream of mine,” Weghorst added.
Wolfsburg are reported to have paid AZ Alkmaar around £10m for Weghorst two years ago.
The towering Dutchman still has three years left on his contract with the Bundesliga side.
