Chelsea and Arsenal strike target Diego Costa ended his month long goal drought by scoring a late winner in the Copa del Rey.
For a striker who has dominated headlines during the transfer window, Diego Costa’s goal drought has gone largely dismissed.
Seen as more of a blip, the Atletico Madrid is too good a player for it to be anything more symptomatically wrong, evidenced by his 22 goals through his first 21 games this season.
This run has been halted by a poor start to 2014, and Costa hadn’t scored a goal in more than 700 minutes of football, none since returning from the winter break… until last night.
In a tightly contested Copa del Rey quarter-final away to Athletic Bilbao, Costa burst through on goal in the 89th minute to seize his big chance, and did not pass it up, rounding the goalkeeper to secure a 2-1 victory.
The Spaniard appears almost certain to remain put over the final days of the transfer window, with his future set to remain undecided until the summer – for now his focus is all on Atletico.
For figures at Arsenal and Chelsea who were debating a move for him earlier in the window, it will be a relief to see him get back on the scoresheet, and provide further evidence he should remain on their shopping list for the summer.
