Spurs signed the Dane the same summer as Arsenal splashed out on Mesut Ozil.
Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil (L) and Tottenham Hotspur’s Christian Eriksen in action
In the summer of 2013 both North London sides brought in creative midfielders with the aim of improving their side.
For Arsenal it was a muscle-flexing purchase. The Gunners spent, as reported by the BBC, a £42.4 million fee to sign the German assist king Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid.
Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen leads his team out on to the pitch
Tottenham meanwhile spent a fraction of that on Christian Eriksen. According to a report from the Telegraph, the Dane cost £11 million from Ajax.
That is a difference of £31.4 million and, four years on, Spurs easily got the better deal.
Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen applauds fans as he is substituted
Ozil has been class for Arsenal at times but his inconsistency and perceived lack of effort is grating.
Eriksen has matured to be far the more-rounded player of the two. He works harder, is more adaptable, can use both feet and has become physically a more suited individual to the Premier League than his North London rival.
Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil
This season, he registered more assists than Ozil and right now, if you had to choose, the £11m man is the one you would pick.
| Position | Team | Goal Assist | Goals | Appearances | Mins Played | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Christian Eriksen | MF | Tottenham | 15 | 8 | 36 | 3,164 |
| Mesut Özil | MF | Arsenal | 9 | 8 | 33 | 2,847 |
Tottenham face a fight keeping hold of Eriksen, with Barcelona snooping. But if they do sell him they will know they are going to make a huge return on their investment from four years ago. They made the better signing, and Tottenham fans will be pleased to remind Arsenal fans about it in the years to come.
