David Meyler has claimed that Roy Keane would be the right man to wrestle Celtic’s Premiership title back from Rangers next season, if he is hired as their new manager.
The Hoops are on the search for a new boss after Neil Lennon quit his role at Parkhead last month.
Lennon resigned shortly before Rangers were crowned Scottish Premiership champions for the first time since 2011, killing Celtic’s 10-in-a-row bid in the process.
According to The Scottish Sun, Keane, who played for the Bhoys after leaving Manchester United, has expressed an interest in getting the job.
And former Premier League footballer Meyler has told Off the Ball that his fellow Irishman would snatch the title back from Gers boss Steven Gerrard next term.
He said: “I think if Roy was to go in there, he brings that winning mentality. If you look at the impact he had at Sunderland, say, because Celtic will be low, they will be flat, like Rangers have blown them out of the water this year, which is unheard of.
“I would definitely love to see Roy take over Celtic. I think he would turn them around next season and I think they would be challenging [for the title] and I they think would beat Rangers.”
Quite a lot of Celtic fans would love to see Keane back at Parkhead but, it has to be remembered, he’s been out of management since 2011.
The 49-year-old has had spells as assistant coach at Republic of Ireland, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest, but none as manager since leaving Ipswich Town a decade ago.
