It has looked for most of the summer transfer window like Granit Xhaka would be leaving Arsenal to team up with Jose Mourinho.

The former Tottenham Hotspur boss, who was sacked by the North Londoners in April, was appointed Roma’s new head coach in May.

Speculation is rife that the Arsenal midfielder – a £30 million signing in 2016 – is set to join the Italian giants [Calciomercato].

Xhaka enhanced the rumours last week by admitting his affection for Mourinho as a manager.

And it looks like the feeling might be mutual because Mourinho is now following the 28-year-old Switzerland international on Instagram.

If we’re honest, that might be the biggest sign yet that the Arsenal star is going to be on his way to Rome.

Well, maybe the second biggest. The biggest clue that Xhaka is off probably lies in the fact that the Swiss star – who helped his nation eliminate France from Euro 2020 earlier this week – also ‘liked’ Mourinho’s latest post on the social networking site.

Bittersweet

Let’s not pretend that Xhaka is unanimously adored by Arsenal fans because that has never been the case.

That being said, he is probably better than a lot of supporters have given him credit for and that was evident in his display against the likes of Paul Pogba and Ngolo Kante at Euro 2020.

He isn’t consistent, but there is much to admire about Xhaka as a player and seeing him go will be a bittersweet moment for quite a lot of supporters, if and when it does happen.
