Gini Wijnaldum has admitted that Liverpool’s form is ‘really shocking’ at the moment.

The reigning Premier League champions are 22 points behind leaders Manchester City during what’s been a dismal defence of their title.

In fact, Liverpool, who sit eighth in the table and seven points adrift of the top four, might not even qualify for the Champions League next term, based on current form.

Jurgen Klopp’s side suffered a 1-0 defeat by Fulham on Sunday for what was their sixth successive Premier League defeat at home – their worst record at Anfield in the history of the club.

Their season is very much about winning the Champions League and Klopp’s troops will hope to reach the quarter-final tonight by seeing off Red Bull Leipzig, who have a 2-0 deficit to make up.

But domestically, things have been going from bad to worse for Liverpool all year and their Dutch midfielder refused to sugarcoat anything.

He told the club’s official website: “Really shocking. I don’t think it was shocking to lose a game but more the way we lost the games. Also because we all believe that the way we lost the games was way too early, that we could do it better even in the situation we are in right now with the injuries and everything.

“We analysed the games and we saw that we could basically fix the situations we were in in the moments where we conceded the goals and even play better, so that’s the most frustrating thing about the situation we are in right now because we all believe that we could do better.”
