Some Sheffield Wednesday supporters feel the position was overlooked during the summer transfer window.

The transfer window may have closed, but clubs can still sign free agents between now and January should they wish to add to their squads. Sheffield Wednesday did exactly that a year ago when Urby Emanuelson arrived at Hillsborough following a spell in Italy.

And while the Owls ended up filling most of the positions they intended to this summer, there’s one which some supporters still feel has been overlooked by manager Carlos Carvalhal.

So could any of the following speedy wingers tick the box for Wednesday this autumn/winter?

Hervin Ongenda

Once considered one of the best young players to have been produced by Paris Saint-Germain, a lack of opportunities saw Ongenda stagnate in the French capital, leading to his departure in January this year. Dutch Eredivisie side PEC Zwolle paid around £270,000 to sign the 22-year-old, but released him six months – and only 58 league minutes – into a three-and-a-half year deal, after he reportedly failed to settle away from his homeland. The signings of Emanuelson, Darryl Lachman and Joost van Aken suggest Wednesday’s recruitment team have some sort of contact in Holland, although Ongenda may be deemed a risky addition – as Emanuelson and Lachman perhaps should have been.

Ashkan Dejagah

Ashkan Dejagah of Fulham scores his team's first goal during the Barclays Premier League match between Fulham and Everton at Craven Cottage on March 30, 2014 in London, England.

Formerly of Fulham and Wolfsburg, among others, Dejagah was released by the German side this summer after a frustrating, injury-hit second spell at the Volkswagen Arena. The 31-year-old’s record in English football isn’t too shabby – five goals, six assists from 43 Premier League matches – and could be a useful addition when fit. He would be the Owls’ first ever Iranian player.

Volkan Sen

A player with whom Carvalhal may be familiar, following the Portuguese coach’s time in charge of Besiktas. Sen was a Trabzonspor player back then and later moved to Fenerbahce, via Bursaspor. The 30-year-old scored eight goals and assisted 13 in 76 games for the Istanbul giants, who released him this summer. Nevertheless, he made 33 appearances last season – including two against Manchester United in Europe – and has 26 caps for Turkey, another nation which has yet to provide a player for Sheffield Wednesday.
