Calcio Mercato report that Serie A champions Juventus are interested in a swap deal involving Tottenham’s Tanguy Ndombele this summer.

Apparently, Italian international Federico Bernadeschi is most likely to be offered in exchange.

That’s because Juve apparently won’t pay the price tag Spurs have slapped on Ndombele.

We’ve looked at the report and come up with three reasons the deal wouldn’t work for Spurs – they shouldn’t take it if it’s on the table…

Ndombele could yet come good

Ndombele is a hugely talented player. He was highly-rated and sought-after when he opted to come to Spurs.

His fitness was not at the right level last term and perhaps he has the wrong manager for his style in Jose Mourinho.

But there’s a player in there and Tottenham shouldn’t give up on him after one season unless an outrageously good offer comes in.

Tottenham’s midfield needs elevating above the mediocre this season and Ndombele has the ability to do that if he improves his application.

Tottenham Hotspur’s summer signings

  1. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

    £15 million; Southampton

  2. Joe Hart

    Free

  3. Matt Doherty

    £13 million; Wolves

  4. Sergio Reguilon

    £25 million; Real Madrid

  5. Gareth Bale

    Loan; Real Madrid

  6. Carlos Vinicius

    Loan; Benfica

  7. Joe Rodon

    £12 million; Swansea

Spurs well-stocked in Bernadeschi’s position

Bernadeschi can play out wide or in an advanced midfield role.

Perhaps, in time, he would offer an upgrade on Dele Alli or Lucas Moura but there’s no sign of them leaving the club any time soon.

It wouldn’t really make much sense for Spurs to add a player who can play in positions they’re not particularly short, while also creating a gap in central midfield.

Bernardeschi didn’t have the best 2020/21

Bernardeschi only hit two league goals in 38 appearances for Juve last season.

Ndombele struggled at Spurs, but Bernardeschi clearly did too.

Juventus wouldn’t be offering him up if he’d been on fire last time around. At Spurs, he’d have to adjust to a new country, style of football and team-mates with little pre-season.

At least Ndombele has had a year to get over all of those issues.
