First touted as a replacement for Christian Eriksen, it looks likely that the pair could be playing alongside each other for Tottenham next season.
Here are three reasons why Lo Celso to Tottenham could be great for Eriksen’s career.
Added competition
If Eriksen has to compete for a place with Lo Celso directly, the attacking midfielder will have to raise his game.
For a player who has featured for Tottenham regularly since 2013, Eriksen needs the competition to raise his game, so that he does not stagnate.
If he could find a way to gel alongside Lo Celso, Eriksen could end up playing the best football of his career.
This would be superb for Tottenham, and add to Eriksen’s reputation.
Rest
One of the products of Eriksen’s regular game time for Spurs over the last six years is a lack of rest.
He has been used as an automatic starter, also for his country. This tiredness led to a slow down in performance at times last season.
Lo Celso’s arrival would mean Spurs could rotate their options more, and prolong the peak of Eriksen’s career.
Considering next summer sees another international tournament taking place, Eriksen could do with being managed sensibly.
Move less painful
Eriksen’s contract expires in a year, and if he wants to, he can quit Spurs on a free.
This would normally generate some ill feeling, and Eriksen would be under a lot of pressure.
Lo Celso signing for Tottenham would mitigate this slightly, as Spurs will already have his replacement.
Eriksen could walk away without feeling guilty, with Tottenham in a strong position regardless.
