Everton have needed a new central defender for the past two seasons and they finally got one on deadline day last week.
Ben Godfrey arrived from Norwich to bolster Carlo Ancelotti’s central defensive options.
The Italian now has Godfrey, fellow Englishmen Michael Keane and Mason Holgate as well as £27 million (BBC) man Yerry Mina to choose from at the back.
Godfrey is a player with a bright future and we’ve picked out three reasons he could go on and be better than the Colombian at Goodison Park.
More assured
Mina can be commanding, but plays close to the edge, without that assurance the really top central defenders have.
He is liable to rush into a tackle or make a mistake and that is something that someone as serene as Ancelotti won’t naturally rub along with.
Godfrey has a lot to learn but the general trend he showed in the Premier League is that he is largely unflappable.
That composure will be valuable to his development.

Mina’s injuries
Everton have been unable to fully rely on Mina’s fitness since his arrival from Barcelona.
That has led to chopping and changing at the back, which isn’t helpful for any team to build a solid foundation.
If Godfrey can stay fit and play multiple games a week, he will become a more reliable option than Mina.

Godfrey’s huge talent and leadership
Godfrey’s former Norwich manager Daniel Farke called the defender a future England captain, as per TalkSport.
Mina is a decent Premier League standard central defender but if Godfrey gets to that level, it’s fair to say he’ll have usurped the Colombian’s current level.
There’s a lot of work for Godfrey to do before he gets to that level, but it’s clear the potential as a player and a leader is there.
