Michael Edwards is in his final season at Liverpool ahead of his departure in the summer.

The Liverpool transfer guru has been praised for the job he has done on Merseyside, both in signing under-the-radar superstars or bringing in above-the-market value cash for players on their books.

Unlike their rivals, Liverpool aren’t a club that go crazy in the market, both when they are buying or selling.

But here we will look at three Liverpool players the club should sell in 2022, mainly for the benefit of their own careers.

Nat Phillips – The ‘English Maldini’ was a shining light for the team during a difficult period last season.

With Virgil Van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez all out to season-ending injuries, the 24-year-old stepped up for the club and ensured an injury-savaged season was saved by them securing Champions League football.

But now that Jurgen Klopp has his star men at the back on the training field once more, alongside summer signing Ibrahima Konate, it has pushed Phillips further down the pecking order.

At 24, the Bolton-born player is more than capable of taking his hard-hitting defender to another Premier League club and it wouldn’t be a surprise if that move comes as early as next month.

Takumi Minamino – The impact Diogo Jota has had on Merseyside is perhaps the impact some were expecting Minamino to have when he arrived 12 months before the Portugal international.

In terms of depth, Minamino provides that for Klopp, but Said Mane, Jota, Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah are all ahead of him for those attacking places.

Even during Liverpool’s 1-0 win against Aston Villa, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was used upfront ahead of Minamino when Firmino was out injured and Jota was unable to start.

The Japan international was sent out on loan during the second half of the last campaign to Southampton, but after scoring two goals in his first three matches, that early magic quickly faded away.

A move away from Anfield is needed for Minamino to re-start his career and showcase that he has the goalscoring touch to be playing in the Premier League.

Joe Gomez – Perhaps a controversial one, but this is one Gomez needs more than anything else.

After the injuries that hit Liverpool last season, there is no way Klopp will want to part ways with Gomez because he will just weaken his backline.

But Gomez, who was part of England’s squad before his season-ending injury, is behind Van Dijk, Matip and new signing Konate in the centre-back pecking order now.

The 2022 World Cup is around the corner and if the Brendan Rodgers signing wants to challenge for a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad, then he needs to leave the club and earn those regular minutes.
