With Mark Hughes wanting a reunion with Xherdan Shaqiri at Southampton, which other Stoke City players could the Welshman target?

Xherdan Shaqiri of Stoke City applauds fans after the Premier League match between Southampton and Stoke City at St Mary's Stadium on March 3, 2018 in Southampton, England.

New Southampton manager Mark Hughes would like to sign one of his old players in Xherdan Shaqiri if Stoke City get relegated this season, according to the Daily Star.

The Potteries are currently 19th in the Premier League and in danger of heading down to the Championship so if they do, and the Saints avoid the drop, then Hughes wants Shaqiri to join him at St Mary’s and is prepared to pay around £20million to make it happen.

Joe Allen of Stoke City makes a break during the Premier League match between Southampton and Stoke City at St Mary's Stadium on March 3, 2018 in Southampton, England.

Joe Allen

Southampton already have a number of central midfielders to call upon, but Allen is player whose talent is far better than his team’s current position suggests.

The Wales international also has an eye for goal and could provide the attacking impetus going forwards alongside the more defensively minded Oriol Romeu, for example.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting

Considered something of a coup when joining from Schalke on a free transfer last summer, Choupo-Moting has done well in what has been a poor year for his new club.

The 28-year-old is a winger who knows where the back of the net is, scoring five goals in the league this term and could buoy what has been a disappointing Saints attack at times in 2017/18.

Ryan Shawcross

The departure of Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool left a big gap at the back for the Hampshire outfit and adding an experienced central defender would be no bad thing.

Shawcross has played 310 games in the English top flight and despite his vast amount of experience still has plenty of game time ahead of him at 30-years-old.
