Newcastle wanted to land Lazio hitman Ciro Immobile had their takeover gone through, according to Goal.
That looks to be off the cards now, with the Sun reporting Steve Bruce has a £30 million budget this summer.
Now Newcastle are shopping in a different price range, we’ve looked at three alternatives to Immobile who could still bang in the goals for the Magpies in 2020/21.
Callum Wilson
Wilson went down with Bournemouth last season and according to the Telegraph, wants a return to the Premier League in order to keep his place in the England squad.
He didn’t have his best season in 2019/20, but before that, proved himself to be a dangerous, pacy forward capable of delivering goals at Premier League level.
Wilson could help Newcastle hit sides on the counter and also works exceptionally hard off the ball.
Chris Wood
According to The Mirror (16/08/20, p67), Newcastle are keen on a swoop for Wood, who is valued at £13 million by Burnley.
That figure seems a touch on the low side but if Newcastle can get him for that, it would be a steal.
He hit 14 Premier League goals last season and would offer a physical presence up front, and an ability to bring the likes of Allan Saint-Maximin into the game.
It doesn’t seem everything is running smoothly at Burnley right now and if Newcastle could take advantage and strike a deal for Wood, it would be a great piece of business.
Troy Deeney
For years, Deeney has been a talismanic figure for Watford, full-blooded and more technically gifted than people give him credit for.
He’s got a no-nonsense approach to the game and knows how to play that lone striker role in a way Joelinton simply doesn’t.
After Watford’s relegation, Deeney hinted he would consider all of his options.
He might not be a name that instantly gets fans excited but he is proven in the top flight and had he not missed a chunk of 2019/20 through injury, Watford may well still be a Premier League club.
